It’s apparent that pizza isn’t the healthiest food, but the design of the boxes it comes in are potentially making it worse. In food packaging, the packages contain perfluorinated compounds or PFCs. One form of PFCs in PFOA which is used to make Teflon products. PFOA is likely a human carcinogen. In animals PFOA causes liver, pancreatic, testicular and mammary gland tumors.
With every problem, there are possible solutions. Ahlstrom in Finland launched a PFOA-free packaging paper for greasy food products. According to bestinpackaging.com, to produce grease resistant packaging papers, flourochemicals are added in the paper production process. However traces of PFOA can be found.
Pizza box designs have to be creative and convenient as well as sustainable and meet health standards. The Toss Pizza Box concept is to deliver each pizza by the slice and have the consumers choose their preferred slice. The box has a detachable holder at the end of the wedge which allows consumers to eat without getting their hands greasy. Also, each wedge box has the nutritional value printed on the back. Wang’s design guarantees that the left over pizza can be stored with little space needed in the fridge. The wedge box also keeps the dough crispy and crunchy in the microwave. There are many different pizza box designs, but the challenge is deciding what looks good to the consumer, what package is best for the product, and what to use to maintain health standards. Once these decisions are made, the perfect pizza box will be made.
